The decision has been made by Southern Huskies Basketball to withdraw from New Zealand’s Sal’s NBL effective immediately and not to renew the NBL1 licence for the Hobart Huskies Men’s and Women’s programs.

We believe our relationship with Basketball Tasmania is untenable and after investing over $1.7 million dollars in the Tasmanian Basketball market since 2017, we have made the difficult decision to remove ourselves.

We have enjoyed our time in Tasmania and believe we have had a positive impact in a short period of time. We’re proud to have provided significant investment to keep the pathway program running for NBL1 after the previous incumbent went into administration and to have completed a very difficult first season across all three of our teams.

We believe there’s a lot to be proud of in what we have achieved since the start of this journey but circumstances over the past month have made it impossible to remain a part of the Basketball program in Tasmania.

We’d like to thank our supporters, volunteers, sponsors and partners for their support.

A detailed exit report explaining these circumstances in full will be presented to the Premier in due course and we hope the inclusions in the report will have a positive impact on change for the betterment of Basketball in Tasmania.

Arrangements will be made with all remaining creditors to be paid.

Really disappointing news but not overly surprising given your business plan has effectively been ripped-off by the owner of the NBL! Game nights were awesome and the Southern Huskies Basketball team have a lot to be proud of. I hope the Huskies branding is retained in some form and the concept of home games being played in the north and south is picked up by the next team (hopefully NBL) and, one day, AFL.

Another team gone..devils,chargers and now huskies..about time the government supported our team. You will be missed we love our family basketball games.

Very Dissapointed we loved watching the Huskies up here in Launceston playing Quality Opposition from across the Ditch, not sure how I'm going to break the News to my Son,as he loved watching the Beast 22 in Action

We loved going to the games here in Launceston. Very sad to hear ☹️

I hear Auckland needs a new team! Oh well, back to square one... Again...

I guess the problem is multiple bids being supported by BTas that is forever changing the goal posts. Chargers folded due to changes from BTas now this. Btas either needs to support the state or a change of management needs to happen. Good luck to basketball in Hobart

Basketball Tasmania has a lot to answer for. With the popularity and continued growth in the sport, this is just disgraceful. 😡😡

What a sad day for basketball in Tasmania:(

Surely with most of the Tassie NBL franchise groundwork already done, the Huskies management can sideline BTas and work exclusively with Kestelman & Loeliger to get the team up.

Well that is disappointing. I was backing you guys and asking the NBL (Australasian) to work with you guys for an NBL licence....

I don't understand the politics but would like to congratulate all those involved for having a go. One thing though, call the team TASMANIA!

I do hope we get a more thorough explanation of why the relationship with Btas is "untenable" and what effect this may well have on the NBL1 programme

As a parent, everything that has/is happening with basketball in Tasmania, makes me determined to steer my children away from the sport. To an outsider it seems a lot of inflated ego , pettiness and nepotism goes on. A shame, but I think basketball has is on the way to losing ground root involvement.

Poor by both huskies and our government !

Bummer, i enjoyed watching them in the SALs League this season.

Business plan of getting the DEC for a bargain and developing the land didn't quite work out. Basketball would've just been the side gig - and selling vitamin water exclusively at home games I suppose.

So how long has Jackie Moon been in charge of Basketball Tas then?

Sad news was looking forward to attending games next season.

Basketball has no big future here in Tasmania due to the popularity of cricket, soccer, netball, football and hockey.

Here we go again, I’m not surprised. We have never been able to run a Tas team in a national competition & never will be able to. Basketball hasn’t worked before & won’t, neither will an AFL side. Chris McCoy??

Oh come on!!! Someone somewhere has some explaining to do. The Chargers and now the Huskies and we want an NBL team. How is this ever going to work?

Time for a change in Basketball Tas management I think.

What happens to the clothing orders we’ve placed for hoodies etc???

Wow!!!!! One season wonders!

For sale..near new chargers and huskies gear..one tired of supporting a lost cause over and over an over.pfff!
